5 years married. 12 years together. 2 beautiful girls. Countless moves. Happy anniversary @talberini I love you and this life we are building💙 It is with a very heavy heart that I’m sharing this. We lost an absolute legend over the weekend and to say we are heartbroken is an understatement. Anyone who met Nug knew she had a special something. I mean, how many dogs can say they were photographed by @thedogist, Vogue Japan, Details Magazine, @shainafishman… the list goes on. She always put a smile on our faces. Tommy and I joked that she was our couples therapist because every time we’d have an argument, we’d look at her and instantly start laughing or feel lighter. I remember once my Mother in Law was feeling sad about something and Nuggy came in from the other room and crawled up on her lap because she could sense she needed it. No dog took more pleasure in eating or sleeping. We got Nuggy when Tommy and I moved in together while living in NYC 10.5 years ago. I wanted a different dog but someone was already playing with her so we started playing with this little pudge ball and fell in love. We couldn’t walk a block without a stranger stopping to pet her or pick her up. She was the flower girl at our wedding. She has been waiting for us when we’ve brought home our babies. She has been with us for our entire adult lives. This past year was brutal, watching her slowly decline and spending the past 7 months in and out of emergency vets and doctors appointments. She was diagnosed with cancer and a stomach disease and it was devastating watching this incredibly vivacious girl turn into a shell of herself. Our only comfort is knowing she doesn’t have to keep fighting. That she’s resting now. I’m not sharing this for attention but because I know she genuinely made so many people so happy, whether you knew her well, met her when she was a shop dog, or just saw her here. We love you, Nuggy. You’ll never be forgotten. Took our girl on her first neighborhood walk! Daily walks have become a nonnegotiable for me. In the same way that I feel like people try and glamorize working nonstop, I also feel like there’s a narrative that not taking care of yourself somehow makes you a better/harder working parent. I think that’s a damn shame. I firmly believe that the reason I feel so much better mentally this pregnancy is because we planned for things to be different and prioritized differently. To be very clear, we budgeted for a baby nurse (which in our eyes was a non negotiable after my postpartum depression/anxiety last time around) and it’s made all the difference (I am fully aware that this is a privilege. I also think it’s important to share). Find the things that make you feel good and make you feel like you. For me that’s walking, working, talking to friends, and spending time with Tommy, which right now looks like watching a couple of episodes of Entourage before bed (a real throwback that honestly probably couldn’t get made now). I’m incredibly grateful that this experience feels so much better than last time. It took us a long time to get here, but I’m grateful we’re here. A lot to smile about these days 💙 (alt title: a lot to cry about these days but no one takes photos in those moments thankfully). Gia is already a month old and is a delicious baby. Nez has been going through a big transition and having some tough moments, including starting to drop her nap and having a lot of tired meltdowns, but also is able to explore with us more than ever, which has its perks. She also makes me laugh so damn hard and is wildly observant. I switched to formula a few days in and did an aggressive and not fun weaning process (more on that later) but feel like myself again, with (knock on wood) no postpartum depression or anxiety this time. Really grateful to feel good in my body and mind this time around. 💙
